Hydrotherapy
Dive Into Hydrotherapy - Discover the Benefits of Water Based Therapy
What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is physiotherapy that occurs in the water. When in a hydrotherapy session, children participate in several water-based exercises that uses the buoyance, heat and natural resistance of water to promote increased movement and muscle strengthening. Children with neurological, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular conditions greatly benefit from this intervention as they can often achieve greater movement in the water comparative to what they can achieve on land.
Conditions that can benefit from Hydrotherapy:
Post-operative fractures (e.g. SUFE/SCFE, femur fractures, tibia fractures)
Neuromuscular conditions such as Duchenne’s, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy
Genetic/Rare genetic conditions with low muscle tone characteristics, such as Down Syndrome
Neurological Diagnoses such as Cerebral Palsy, Acquired Brain Injuries, Spina Bifida
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Why Hydrotherapy!
Hydrotherapy offers a range of benefits for both physical and mental well-being.
Hydrotherapy is offered as a stand-alone therapy or can be an adjunctive therapy to land-based physiotherapy. If you are interested in our hydrotherapy program, please get in touch via our enquiry form for further information.
Pain Relief
The buoyancy of water reduces pressure on joints and muscles, providing relief from pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and musculoskeletal injuries.
Improved Balance and Coordination
Performing exercises in water challenges balance and coordination due to the constantly changing environment, helping to improve these skills over time.
Improved Movement
The combination of buoyancy and warmth of the water can allow children to gain greater freedom of movement and improved stretches to what they can achieve on land
Cardiovascular Benefits
Hydrotherapy for some children, such as those with neuromuscular or neurological conditions, is the only time they are able to achieve breathlessness and develop their cardiovascular system.
Muscle Strengthening
Moving against the resistance of the water can promote increased muscle strength. Specific equipment can be used to increase the difficulty of the exercise to lead to greater muscle strengthening.
Improved Engagement in Therapy
Some children really enjoy being in the water and therefore achieve greater participation in therapy to what they can achieve on land.
